Our member survey indicated that they wanted a stair climber added to our cardio line up. Any recommendations? My service tech said Life Fitness and StairMaster are the better ones. He's had to fix a lot of the Matrix climbers.

Stair Master brand is a favorite ... we have had 1 in each of our 2 different locations and they have been great and members love this one. We have also had Precor and Cybex and they are rarely used

I've heard that the Matrix Climbmills are well performing. They've fixed issues with the initial models and repair/maintenance needs are low with the newer models. I just priced each model out using our national agreement with Matrix and we basically get 50% list price. The low end model Climbmill C3X = $4,023 + Tax + Shipping + Delivery. All in for my location is $4,832. The high end model C7XI is $7,185 and all in for $8,298. There are two middle models have all in costs of $5,523 and $6,880. Again that's delivery to northeast Ohio from WI.

I bought both my Stairmasters used off of Craig's List. Members use them all the time and I saved at least $2,000 each versus buying new.

Stairmaster was purchased by Johnson about 4 years ago. If it says Stairmaster it's used. Personally I think Stair mills are crap and don't give you much of a workout unless you're running up them and if you do they can't keep up. There are far better machines out there which will give you a far better workout. Members may ask for them, but that's because that's what they know. Most prop themselves up on the rails and feel like they've done something.
To make my point we went to a planet fitness nearby and I rode on the escalator (I mean walked on the mill for 3 hours straight) Didn't break a sweat and didn't feel like I got any workout whatsoever. Old technology asked for by people who don't know any better.

You are correct members ask for them because that's what they know, but also prospects may join because they see familiar machines they like while touring. I have the familiar machines, otherwise prospects that favor them may go down the street to other clubs that have them, like you said...they don't know any better.
