If you listened to the planet fitness conference call you'd hear that their target market is the first time gym goer. These are the people who have never stepped foot in a gym before, or maybe did at one time, but gave up. This is their bread and butter. So my question is "How do we snatch this market opportunity from them?" Years ago there was a Fitness Study marketing tool. The way it worked was that postcards were mailed out and 50 or so clients were signed up. They met with a personal trainer for an initial consultation and a fit score and then met with them about 2 times a week, and ran for something like 30 days. It was a bit on the pricey side, because you had to pay the personal trainers for the time they spent, but it was also a good way to get personal training going. The program also came with access to a website to track visits and progress. It was many years back, so I don't recall details that well.
The participants paid some nominal amount up front, something like $50 or so. If they met with the trainer 2 times a week for those 30 days they got their $50 back. If they didn't they forfeited it. Of course there were always accommodations made for a missed session. At the end of the 30 days you measured them again and presented them with an offer to sign up. There were also helpful emails sent during that time period and the good trainers also sent out personalized emails relevant to the participant.
I really don't think this is something that would be that difficult to put together ourselves, it's just the time and money for the personal trainers. Of course if you don't have personal trainers this isn't an option. I can also think of a few tweaks here and there to improve the participant experience.
Does anyone else remember details about this program? I think this would be a great alternative to some of the advertising we're currently doing and a great way to target that same market that planet fitness is targeting.
