Are you familiar with this franchise? They just came to our state (IL). They claim they are "smoking out" the Anytimes.
Same exact equip as Snap. 24/7. Memberships starting @ $15/Month.

They look like their main spots are Atlanta, Knoxville, Louisville and Florida. But wait isn't their paint scheme the same as the new snap one, and aren't they using a 24/7 door access system? But wait, snap told me that was a proprietary feature of snaps. Does that mean that this isn't true. Snap, you should go sue them for infringing on your proclaimed proprietary door access system. But wait, if that's not proprietary then what part of snap is? But we're supposed to protect their proprietary information. Just exactly what would that be? Maybe it's the 30 day membership for $8.95, no limits on how many you can get, just change your email address.

Wow, looks like they're ripped off both Snap Fitness and Anytime Fitness. Pretty brazen on their part, but it's probably different enough that it's not trademark infringement.

Haha. Yes. It does seem like copy. I am learning from them though, trying to figure out how to use their way of "smoking out anytime" to help us.
Do you have Anytimes near you? How has that been?
The 30 day trial... is a pain...
Rollover rate for online trials is less than 30%, if that...more like 20% Id say. its not great.

We have lots of Anytimes around here...they seem to do a good job. Nice clubs, well staffed, and the club closest to us will sign people up for $29/mo (which I'm told is the lowest they are allowed to sell a membership at). It makes it tough to compete, but we are holding our own.
I could see a $15-25/mo model as being a way to compete against Planet, etc. Slightly higher price point than Planet, but members are getting possibly better equipment and a more "studio" experience.
I do like the idea of the "rate guarantee" annual fee. I have heard more Snaps are starting to implement some type of annual fee, typically charged in January or February.

I have an anytime that just opened near me and they charge the $30/mo if you sign for 18 months and $35 if for 12 months. I think that's typical of that gym. I would never sign that contract. I'm at $25/mo and my retention factor is there with much personal engagement on my part. I think what I charge is fair and is what I would pay if I were a member...not more. He will struggle in my area. Honestly, I never feared anytime fit in any area because of their restrictions. I fear the dime-store gym and also competitor franchisees that recklessly insert a gym on a street corner near me in an area where 2 gyms could not survive. They would only split the pie and each would make less.
This workout anytime seems to be another ridiculous franchise that thinks they have a better idea than everyone else. By looking at their costs, it looks like they are between the dime-store planet fitness type of gym and our smaller more expensive experience. They need quantity, like planet, to thrive. They won't open near a planet. They will just double our headaches we already have with low priced clubs. Honestly, if I were going to set up another smaller snap-type gym (which I would never do again), I would search for small towns and areas where these low cost gyms would never bother with. They run/plan their business by the numbers and nothing more.

I'm talking going into cities of 15,000 people or so. I would guess they wouldn't bother with towns with a population less than 10,000, though.

Heck, pretty soon we'll be paying people to work out in our clubs. This industry has gotten so stupid with everyone cannibalizing each others' businesses, and fighting for smaller shares of the same shrinking pie...I'm not sure what the future holds, but I don't have any confidence right now.

I have a pretty good idea of what some of their expense and income numbers are (based on $ per member and estimated # of members). I'm not sure how they keep their heads above water. I keep expecting to see them show up on an episode of "The Profit". I also know they push personal training and supplements really hard. I saw a trainer hop onto a vacant treadmill and talk with one member about PT. I also saw another trainer follow a member into the locker room and try to sell her supplements. The model makes no sense to me. If you're selling memberships for $5/month ($70/year fee) and as low as free/month you're going to primarily attract members on a low budget. The other thought that crossed my mind in that it could be a money laundering front. We've had a couple members go over there and come back.

I'm honestly wondering if it's time to rip up the Snap Fitness model of charging $35-40 bucks a month for a basic membership, and go down to maybe $20-25/mo. That would put us under the Anytimes in the area. We'd throw in tanning for free since we barely make any tanning revenue anyway. It's a risk, but I'm wondering if it's time.

Visit other clubs in your area. If you can sign up for a membership at different clubs then do it. Work out there, see what you like and what you don't like. Figure out what you can improve in order to differentiate yourself and improve your member experience. I keep looking for the least expensive improvements which will have the greatest impact for the member's $$. Incorporate the differentiators into your tour and point out what some clubs do, but what you do to make your club better. By doing that you've already set up the other club for failure if they plan on going there for a tour as well. If they've already been there then they'll notice the difference immediately.
If you can't come up with anything then as a last resort lower your price.
Hotels have pricing that's all over the map. Each one sells a room for a night, some for $50 and others for $250. They may be side by side. What makes one worth $250? If they're exactly the same then the $250 one won't do well. However, if there's something about it guests really like then they'll see the value in the higher price.

The Snap Fitness locations that went to lower rates and cheap prepays have gone out of business. And they do damage to the other SF locations in their area. So then the brand becomes even weaker. I hope you are not in my area with plans to go cheaper. If you do, please make it a HOME club only membership.
