I have the hardest time finding good help!
I generally pay staff $10 an hour, I dont give them any fitware access so their jobs are so simple, but its still hard to get people to actually WORK. I do commission as well, do you?
Trainers are 1099--- work independently, but have not really been able to get training off the ground.
How many staff do you have? Or do you run your gym yourself?
Or are you an.............. ABSENTEE owner...with 12 hrs a week staffed hours.. (you know, Snaps RUN THEMSELVES! *sarcasm*)

We have one manager we pay $12/hr plus commissions. He does handle Fitware reports, etc. Really it's not that hard after they get trained on it (which should take a day or two, tops).
We also have two part time personal trainers. They get a low hourly wage, but a split of the training revenues. I tried the independent contract thing for a long time, and it never worked well for us. Either the trainers would flake out after a couple weeks, or the trainer would make virtually all the revenue from PT in order to make it worth their while.

Seems about right, I give my staff $10-Hr . they have no fitware access , they basically clean and fill out member agreements and make a few calls, mostly I have them for me when I need a night off! I have THE SAME problem with PT! But then when I thought why not do hourly for pt @10 /hr or something, nobody wants to apply. My current PT is charging $50-session and the clients are....scared off by the price They also want me to hand them all their clients, and I feel like the best way for them to sell their services, is in person, not thru a 3rd party or another employee... So tell me more, I'm open to changing the PT system

Most trainers aren't good sales people. The best way is to sell members a session package when they first join. I know that's easier said than done, though.

Can someone post some examples of "session packages" that they've found work well? I'm assuming you mean the "transformation" type packages that have been talked about? Just trying to figure out what some are finding the most successful at not only signing people up, but retaining them as well. Have thought about a $249.00 transformational package that includes signup, access card, t-shirt, and 8 PT sessions with a certified trainer, but even at that discounted price, not sure how good that will go over. 8 sessions could be touted as 2 full months with a trainer. Has anyone had successful experience in such packages?

I have 1 full time club manager works 11am to 7pm. He is also a personal trainer. I pay him 8 an hour behind the desk and we do a 60 40 split with his clients. Our packages have pt in them so its incentive for him to sell those packages since he gets a cut out of them. he charges about 35 an hour. when he does pt he is self contracting so I don't pay payroll or taxes on that end. seems to be working out so far.

I get what you're saying, Ike...but 8 an hour does not seem like a livable wage. At least not in my area (Chicago Burbs). How satisfied are your employees with that type of wage? Do you commission him on signups or give him bonus incentives as well>

I don't think you can really specify a specific dollar amount per hour. What's good pay in Peoria may not even be minimum wage in San Fran. I think $1 over the state minimum wage with commissions and scheduled merit increases is fair.
If you have a sales background then I'd recommend sitting in on a session with the personal trainer. Provide some suggestions on where they can make improvements. We typically let the PT do their own thing unless we see they're not getting the sales. Some will refuse to ask for the sale. We try to qualify this when we bring them on board, but that doesn't always work. One trainer got to the end of their initial consultation and ended it with "Do you have any questions? No? Well have a nice day and let us know if any come up". We tried to explain that they had to ask for the sale and the opportunity to help the member". We did some role playing, but they just weren't going to ask for the sale. This makes our PT business highly dependent on the sales skills of the trainer. If a good trainer leaves then PT sales suffer until we can get another good trainer in willing to do sales. Not a great model, but it's what we currently have and haven't come up with anything better, yet.

min wage here is 7.25 I pay 8 for first 90 days after they prove themselves, which most quit within that time. I raise it to 8.50 for front desk. For every 100 members in the positive they will get a 1000 in commission. The more pt they sale the more money they make. The way I see it if you give them a lot more for front desk then what is their incentive to sale pt? they will get comfortable with front desk wage and wont have a need to boost up your pt revenue. so you want them to go after the pt because that is were the real money is and you kill two birds with one stone bc you have front desk covered and pt getting done. I hope that makes sense

We have a Sales/Training Manager; Base Salary (about $23,000) per yr plus commission on Training packages and memberships; and 50/50 split of PT sessions if they are a Trainer and do one on one.

Firecracker Girl. I am curious as to why you don't give your employees access to fitware? Access can be limited based on their "role" how much access you want to give them. What about the Member Engager? Maybe they are bored & don't feel productive without computer access, I would be!
