Had a 22 year old come in yesterday with one of these cards. I asked him some details about the program, from a consumer stand point. Here's how the program works...
As part of their insurance plan they can add on the gym option. This enables them to work out at multiple fitness centers for $100/month. No I'm kidding, it's $50/month. Haha, thought that was true? No, it's actually $25/month. So help me understand the logic behind why we would do this
- The member can pay our higher price, or the lower $25/month price. In addition they can use all sorts of other clubs. - We only get paid if the swipe their access card, and only $2 each time they access the club with a max of something like $18/month. - Decide they want to go somewhere else for the month? We collect $0 and have to pay Snap a $35/month administration fee and a monthly member maintenance fee. In other words we've paying for the privilege of having that person as a member. - Are we notified by snap if the person isn't active and it's costing us money to have them as a member? Surely that $35/month administration fee gets us some sort of administration. Nope. It's basically a surcharge. (ie a charge for doing nothing)

I charge all my new insurance members who wish to enroll in my club an enrollment fee and a fee for their access card. It's my club and if thats what I want to charge for them to enroll then thats what I am going to do. If they complain or choose not to sign up thats fine with me, because they are probably just going to every club that offers it to sign up just because they can.

Every time I have tried to charge an enrollment fee and/or for the access card, or set a minimum visit requirement I have received a call from Healthways telling me I can not do those things per the contract with Corp. Has any one else received a call from Healthways for doing these things?

I have been charging for the card except one time a woman said she was going to call healthways saying they would probably pay for it. I told her they won't and explained why I charge for it. I ended up giving her have the card. She promised she would use the membership. She has not been in the gym for two months.

If they want a free access card I point them to the 30 day trial program. I also point out that we charge an administration fee for entering them into the system. You can pick how much that administration fee is.

So I go for a rare workout today without being bothered since it is a holiday and not many people coming in. Of course, as usual, I catch abuse. A Prime member let's her boyfriend use her key. It's the 2nd time that key was swiped today. At first he tells me she was going to get him a key because he has blue cross so I try and look him up and there is no such deal for him. Then he comes clean and says LA is closed today so he needs a workout. I try and sell him on my deal and he'll think about it. I charge him a visitor's fee and make sure he tells the key holder it's for her use only. Once again, someone who would rather pay another gym and slip into mine for free. I consider that very disrespectful.
I usually give one warning before I turn their key off. It annoys me that people would pass their key around. This is the price we pay for a devalued membership of giving the key away for free.

I have only two Prime members who are snowbirds and transfer their membership to an Arizona club. I have never had issues with them. That's the good news. I used to have 120 members on Silver Sneakers and only 20 used the gym and completed their 8 visits per month. I was losing so much money with all the fees I was charged that I oped out of the program completely. I give the members who were in the program a discounted rate so now I actually make some money these memberships. The sad thing about this program is most of these members are very wealthy and don't need the program.
